The international steel industry has expanded its monitoring framework for environmental, social, and governance performance from eight to 19 indicators to provide a more comprehensive perspective.
New indicators in worldsteel’s Sustainability Indicators 2025 Report include renewable energy consumption, emissions intensity, and fresh water withdrawal.
Also significant is for the first time industry and route-level emissions intensity indicators go beyond carbon dioxide to also cover methane and nitrous oxide, as well as emissions from upstream mining activities.
Importantly, for the first time, industry and route-level CO2 intensity indicators extend beyond carbon dioxide (CO2) to include methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), as well as emissions from upstream mining activities.
These changes better align worldsteel’s reporting with the United Nations Development Goals, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, ISO standards, worldsteel’s own life cycle assessment (LCA) framework, and the expectations set out in SBTi guidance. They represent an important step forward in transparency and credibility.
worldsteel has also published an accompanying updated policy paper on climate change and the production of iron and steel.
Fabricators, reinforcing processors and rollformers are encouraged to engage with the Steel Sustainability Australia program – the country’s most widely adopted sustainability compliance scheme for the steel industry – to showcase their leadership in sustainability, commitment to transparency and alignment with global ESG standards.
