SSA assists Steelwork Bendigo with business direction

Director of Steelwork Bendigo Jason Miller is gearing his fabrication business towards more sustainable practices. A qualified boilermaker and rigger, Jason has been running the company since 2007, and took over ownership in 2017.

He understands the importance of strong sustainability measures for companies to prosper and grow in the modern era. “To be honest it’s fairly new territory for me and I found the Steel Sustainability Australia (SSA) certification program as a good way for me to learn the expectations specifically oriented toward our industry,” Jason says. “It helps open your eyes to where your business strengths and weaknesses are in relation to sustainability.  That then gives you some direction on how to move forward in addressing any shortfalls.”

Jason says the market increasingly seeks suppliers who demonstrate strong sustainable practices. “Gaining SSA certification gives you a credible advantage in demonstrating that commitment,” he says. “SSA assessors were very helpful and patient in assisting me with providing the information and documentation required to gain me certification.  I was a little lost and overwhelmed at first but was given very helpful direction.”

Steelwork Bendigo is predominantly a structural steel fabrication and erection company.  It mainly services the Bendigo, Victoria regional area on small-to-medium-sized structures up to a few hundred tonnes. Employing 35 full-time employees, it offers a full in-house service from workshop drawings to fabrication, coatings and installation.  A lot of its work is government projects at a local, state or federal level.
